Phantasy Star Online - Legit Players Guide
Written by: Ben Pekarek
Phantasy Star Online is a game that has hardly any consequences for dying. In-fact there really is no way to "lose" at PSO. The worst thing that happens to you when you die, is you lose any Mesata(currency) you had on your player before dying. Thats it. If you can't get past a certain area or boss, that means you have to play more in another area to level your character to make him stronger. It is impossible to not win at PSO. You could be the worst video game player on the planet and still play Phantasy Star Online.

What does it mean to play PSO "LEGIT"? |
Long story short, legit gamers do not cheat. Playing Phantasy Star Online LEGIT, means to play pso at its factory default settings, without hacks, duped items, cheats, or game alterations. To play LEGIT means to play the game in its pure form. By playing legit you reap all of the benefits, satisfaction, and fun intended by the developers, Sonic Team.
The end result is 2 entirely different game-play styles. Legit game-play, and cheater game-play. The two do not mesh very well. It will be up to you to decided how you want to play PSO. It is your choice whether or not you wish to play legit. There are communities on the internet for both legit and cheat based PSO game-play. The OnlineConsoles community is centered around Legit game-play.

What are dupes? |
The term "dupes" is short for duplicated items. Cheaters will use an exploit to duplicate Weapons, Techniques, Shields and Armor, Rares, Animal Parts, and Mags. This results in players obtaining certain rare items prematurely. Many online games suffer from dupes, however Phantasy Star Online has been affected the most due to the ease of item transfer between users.

What are hacked items? |
Hacked items are those that are tampered with. The stats of the item are altered to be more powerfull than the game will allow for. Mags are often hacked to yield a combination that would be impossible to grow otherwise.

Why are dupes bad? |
Dupes have a varying negative effect on game-play. Enemies fall faster, experience points are distributed differently, and the entire outcome of the game is changed by using dupes. On the Dreamcast versions of Phantasy Star Online duplicated items can cause the game to freeze when boss battles start. Cheating also effects the skill level of the player.
Dupe users actually know less about how to play Phantasy Star Online, because they didn't go through the motions of learning how to play the game on their own. They often do not know about such nuances as Photon Blast combos/boosting or animal part combinations. Because they just get free weapons and start killing stuff, they never took the time to actually play PSO. They are thus less knowledgeable at playing the game, which can result in a very conflicting game experience. On top of this, dupers don't need any items. They don't need to break open boxes or collect mesata. They often play with other dupers and skip everything in the game. They only kill enemies for experience points and keep on running, often ahead, rudely leaving you behind. Sometimes starting the boss fight without you claiming "you are too slow".

How can I protect myself against acquiring duplicated items? |
Playing with a duper is one thing, but accidentally getting duped items can be really undesirable if you are trying to be a Legit gamer. The best rule of thumb to ensure your character remains 100% legit, is to not accept items from other players. Find all your own items. Going on rare hunts with friends to actually FIND rares and track them down is what PSO is all about. If you do want to trade or accept items as gifts, it is recommended that you only do so with trusted friends that are as serious about playing legit as you are.
However be warned, there are many players who have dupes, but don't even know they do, or what dupes are in the first place. There are also players that willingly use a "few" duped items, and will even pass them off to other users. They still call themselves 100% legit, and stay in denial about ever using dupes. If you finally point out they are using a duped item and prove that they are, no matter how legit they say they are they will not get rid of the item. Finally there are serious cheaters who enjoy spreading duped items. They will drop items on Pioneer 2, and even try to scatter them in a battle on Ragol as if they actually dropped. They get some sort of kick out of getting a naive newbies to start using dupes. It's a real shame.
In the end the best course of action is to just find your own stuff. Then you can be sure you don't have any shady items.

Extra Tip |
Do not go overboard with the legit ethics. If you are too extreme in your quest to be a legit player, you could end up alienating actual legit players because you're too paranoid!! Be smart. The more you play PSO the more you will able to tell if a player is a cheater, or a legit pso gamer. This guide as a whole should give you a good starting base to playing the game and finding other legit gamers to play with.
Good luck in your future hunting on ragol!
