Not awesome at all. Negative reviews pouring in.

Squeenix appear to have been on one of late. They did the same with the steam port of FF6. Lazy lazy lazy.

Is the best place to play FF6 on the GBA? At least for a western version?

I would imagine the GBA version would have a bit of a funky resolution.

The PS1 version must have been a port rather than an emulation of the game. I think that version was available on PS3 and maybe on PS4. Although - that would probably look a bit funny on a modern tv.

Maybe there is no nice simple way to play it! Shocked

Looks like SE took the mobile version, slapped 2xSai on it, compiled, and called it a day. I'm sure it isn't a terrible way to play the game, but definitely a poor rendition that does the art absolutely no justice. It's also missing many of the features of the DS version according to the reviews, which is a real head scratcher.

As for FF6, there is a sound restoration hack out there for the GBA version. It also cleans up some of the framerate issues present in the original release. I haven't tried it myself, but it seems like a solid way to play the game.

EDIT: After further reading, SE substantially updated the PC port after the outcry. It is, from my understanding, on par with the DS version when it comes to features and, overall, a decent version of the game. I still contend that it was a sloppy port, but it's good to see a company honoring a classic game.
