Yes, it's a playable game even without the link cable function.

alright next question is can you play with four players with everyone using a controller or do you need game boy advances for multiplayer.

I rented the game and played some single player. the game is a lot of fun. im sure its a blast with four people

You need GBAs and GC/GBA link cables for multiplayer

Ideal setups for multiplayer with 4 Swords or Crystal Chronicles include:

1 GameCube on a TV, plus 2-4 GBA's

or

1 GameCube on a TV, plus 2-4 GameCubes outfitted with GBA Players & GC 5 inch fliptop LCD displays, and WaveBirds

or

the same as above but with TV's

There are a couple of ways you can approach this. It all depends on how crazy you want to get Wink It would be really cool if there were more games that supported the this feature. However, if you are looking for extra motivation to go with a multi-gamecube setup, you can network GBA games between two GameCube's with GBA Players. So it opens up a huge world of networking possibilities.

my next move for the gamecube is to get a game boy player. they can be found for 20 if you look hard enough.

One of my friends has like 4 GBAs so ill just have to get some link cables to get some multiplayer going. it would be nice if you could use controllers for multiplayer but i guess the link cables work too
