Nintendo made the NES2 and the SNES2 systems but why do you think Nintendo left the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube out of this cycle? would you have bought a similarly compact Nintendo 64 system? it would have been interesting to see!

Well don't think the gc could get any more compact lol. The n64 was pretty compact as well, would have been nice to have a smaller version though. I wouldn't have bought one back then but now that ive got too many systems the smaller a system is the better. I will probably be putting some time into my n64 again as well since I am stuck on dial up and bored as hell haha. My dad also found 6 n64 games at a thrift store, the best being starfox which I have never played before.

This is purely conjecture on my part, but, I don't think the market support was there. I doubt many would've cared about a more compact N64 or GC. As lazybum already pointed out, the systems were already pretty small, especially the GC. I never heard anyone complain about the size of the N64 either.

In both cases, I believe Nintendo was eager to wipe their hands clean and focus all their attention on the new home console. The GC I can understand, but the N64 commanded a very respectable 2nd place and was, at least back in school, as much of a success with gamers as the PS1. But again, the market grew tired of paying a premium for cartridges and developers were sick of the lead time and cost of manufacture of N64 cartridges vs. pressing CDs.

A trend I have noticed is that the leading console for each generation can co-exist with it's successor. For Nintendo examples, one only has to look at the NES and SNES, especially the NES. The NES was actually being produced in Japan until 2003, giving it a lifespan of 20 years. The SNES wasn't quite the runaway success as the NES, but was produced for 13 years. The GC and N64 were dropped fairly quickly after the last spat of releases. Again, the systems did not resonate as well with the market, thus no demand for a redesigned console.
