On my JVC, it was extremmmmly grainy with standard video cables. When I got an S-Video cable it cleared everything up, all the crawls and waves all gone. Everything got super crisp. My eyes were killing me before, it was brutal. Once I got s-veo cable it cleared it all up. best 9.99 I ever spent. Now I won't settle for anything less.

Want to see something even better try getting the component cables they are like $30 or something you have to buy them direct from Nintendo I believe... But if you also get a progressive scan TV. Oh man games that are progressive scan compatible (PSO is and most new Nintendo games as well as Viewtiful Joe) You turn that on and wow it looks awesome!! Crisp isn't the word for it Smile But buying a new TV is something I am sure not doing lol my friend got one and it is very nice though.

I'd have gotten the Progressive scan cables, but my TV supports 480i, not 480p. I do, however, have s-video. And man, is it awesome! Sooo much better than the standard cables. I would go for it, they're great.

Does Nintendo make an S-Video cable, and if so, can you find it in retail stores? If they don't what third party cable is the best?

They do make an s-video cable, you just can't find it in stores (gotta order it from their site). There are plenty of 3rd party cables, but I dunno which you should go with (i got mine from ninty's store).

Well what I have and really like, are the MadCatz universal S-Video cables. They are $9.99 you can find them at walmart or gamestop and many other places. Basically they have 3 system connectors in 1. For GC, XBOX, and PS2. Now.....i think its says you can have them all connected...but i never got this to work. It would short out the video or audio on another device. So you can only have 1 console hooked up at a time.

The main reason why I like having them. Is they are multipurpose. If I am gonna have a friend over for any LAN activities. Having a spare s-video cable that can connect to 2 different systems(GC...and PS2.....i don't own xbox), is a very good thing.

I have these and a Pelican 5 port S-video switch box. It rules. I got DVD Player, PS2, GC and DC all hooked up.

i have the same mad cats s video cable...it is awesome an it truly shows when using the cube...iw as hoping it would make the xbox look een better but i couldnt notice an improvement on da xbox or ps2...guess gamecube is the onlu one that truly takes advantage of it..maybe its time for nintendo to stop using those same n64 a/v cables...maybe thats why 64 was sumtimes considered blurry

Yes, as posted before, s-video is definitely worth it. Of course component (red, green, and blue video connectors) is better, but s-video really is a lot better than composite (the yellow connector). Definitely worth the $10 or so it will cost for a cable that supports it. Component video does cost a bit for the cable and TVs that support it are expensive, but for most people, s-video is very attainable, and it is definitely worth it.

And yeah, I've got one (actually a couple) of those switchboxes too (they sell them at GameStop for $20 rebranded with the GameStop logo on top). Very useful if you've got a lot of consoles and/or video devices to hook up (and they've got that oh-so-important s-video compatibility). Also very nice to run the audio out from the switchbox into a stereo (even just an Aiwa shelf system will do) rather than into your TV.

But even if you're not going to go as far as getting a switchbox or using a stereo for the sound, definitely do yourself a favor and get the s-video cable. You'll be happy you did.

What type connector does the S-Video cable use (what does it plug into on the TV)?

It actually looks a lot like a PC keyboard connector. An s-video connection is a small plug about the same diameter as an RCA cable, but instead of one huge fat "pin" sticking way out of the center, it has four very small pins that do not protrude beyond the rim of the connector. It really does look a lot like the connection for a PC keyboard.

The cable itself has the small pins on it, and the TV should look like the actual keyboard plug-in connector that is on the back of a computer. (Incidentally, s-video connection cables and sockets are usually - although not always - colored black.)
