If you live near a Fry's Electronics, hit it up. I was able to find a model by TRENDnet (kind of crappy but it works) that has 4 ethernet ports plus wireless for only $29. It may be hard to find something again for that cheap that has wireless, but I'm sure you could find one for about the same price without it.
If you don't live near a Fry's, and you don't mind buying things over the web, try a search on www.pricegrabber.com for "router -wireless" to find routers but exclude the ones with wireless access. I just did it and saw new ones for $33 and refurbished ones for $19. Honestly, I don't really feel that the brand matters that much. Just get a cheap one and call it good. |

No, I was actually suggesting that you get any router that you can find for cheap, regardless of whether or not it has wireless or not. In fact, I was saying that you should probably try to get one without wireless because it'd be cheaper.
Even if you do get one with wireless, they usually have a few regular ports too, so you can just ignore the wireless part and hook it up with a category 5 network cable like you would if it was a normal router. If you do end up with a wireless router, though, and you really want to hook up your GameCube (or Dreamcast or PS2 or Xbox) without running wires, you can do it. You will need something called a "wireless bridge." It is a small adapter that plugs into a network port on your device (computer or videogame console) and "translates" that into wireless. You probably don't want to go this way though, because wireless bridges usually cost $70 to $100. |

Just a regular net cable would be fine for connecting any device (PC, Xbox, GC, PS2, etc.) to the router. The crossover cable is only used when connecting one device directly to another device (GC to GC, Xbox to Xbox, etc.) |

You should be able to just jack your gamesystems into the router and the DCHP server will auto detect them. Basically you just have to set the DNS to 0.0.0.0 dont change anything else. yea getting a router makes life....SO MUCH easier. You can even jack in hubs/switches and expand your network as you please. Whats nuts is when people ONLY buy a hub. It makes configuring ones consoles......a serious pain in the ass. Even after I tell people to get a router they still get a hub, then come back saying "its not working" YEA cause I said to get a router!!!!! So kudos to you Oddity for getting a router and setting up a proper network. Also linksys are the more userfriendly routers and even have DMZ setup as well. Setting up DMZ for a local machine allows you to set a console to have ALL its ports open for that machine on the network. It really helps out when hosting games. |
