I've been tossing around the idea of getting a used copy of one of the newer versions of PSO ever since I saw a copy of the Xbox version for $12 a while ago. I'll still be playing primarily on the PAL version for Dreamcast for quite some time, but I did want to know exactly how the online part of PSO for GameCube works.

If I were to buy a used version, would I still be allowed one month of free online play? If I bought a used version and never signed up for a Hunter's License, would I still be able to play offline? Would I be able to play multiplayer split-screen offline if I never had a Hunter's License?

I don't mean to be a complete cheapskate, but I have other things that I'd rather pay for right now, and I just wouldn't be playing GameCube PSO enough to warrant paying for it. I mostly just want to check it out (if I can find a cheap used copy).

So does anyone have any info on playing with a used copy, either online or offline? I'm just wondering.

the great thing about the GCN version of PSO is that u don't have to buy a HL to play the game offline. the only reason u need a HL is to play online. also, the GCN version has a great feature that puts your account on hold which is good if one month u know u wont play or wont have the money to play. you can put a hold on ur account and don't have to pay then u can reactivat ur account and pick PSO up any time.

about the used copy and one month free... i don't think so. but it would depend on if the orignal user played online. and there is no way of finding that out unless u by it from the person.

if u have any other questions.... just ask. i hope i helped

You could still play offline for all the questions you asked but online you could only play if the person who had it never played online and if that person did play online I believe you could call SEGA and ask them to reset the serial number and whatever else is needed(I'm not entirely sure if this is possible).

ok so wait. im kinda new to the GC PSO thingy. Im like lvl 97 but i havent gone online yet. I havent gotten a router. Can you more of explain this account hold? I dont really understand. And the first month being free, do you just get to go online without doing any credit card info, or do you have to buy a hunters licence and then they let you play for 2 months instead of one?

I'm not sure since I don't have a copy yet, but I'd guess you have to register to get your first month free. You probably won't get charged anything until that month is up (at which point you'd be charged for the second month), but you probably do have to set up an account with a credit card and everything.

I'd just like to point out that finding a used copy of PSO for GameCube is really hard. Yes, I could buy it brand new for $50 but even that is rather hard to find. Even eBay usually sells used GameCube Ep 1&2 for close to $50. (Xbox is about $12, but I'm not as interested in that.)

I was looking to check out the GCN version of PSO, but it looks like that won't be happening for quite some time. Such is life.

This may have been the case in the past, but I just received an email from Sega of America that pretty much lays it all on the line. (I obscured the names to protect the innocent.) Of course this may be a case of me just talking to the wrong person, but according to this, they are not open to anyone using used copies of PSO for GameCube online. Period.

So don't buy a used copy unless you're sure it's never been used online.

Dear Mr. ********,

Thank you for e-mailing Sega Technical Support.

If the original owner of the game created a Gamecube Phantasy Star Online hunter's license, you will not be able to create a second one.

There is no way to reset the hunter's license.

There are no replacement serial numbers for Phantasy Star Online games.

Sincerely,
